Our professional mediation service can help you reach an agreement with your former partner on issues surrounding divorce and separation.

What is mediation?

Mediation is way to get people talking after a relationship breaks down. It's a formal process that encourages communication. During mediation you'll sit round a table together, express your concerns and explore ways to resolve your differences. A neutral, specialist mediator guides you through these discussions and negotiations.

When a relationship breaks down, there’s a lot to think about. Your family home, money, pensions and childcare - it all needs to be settled fairly. Mediation gets you together, and helps put you on the same page. Our mediators will guide you through the process and give you all the support you need. This helps to create the right conditions for a successful result. They will then get you and your partner to talk in a constructive way, and encourage you to start looking at options and ideas. In this way they are often able to help you find a workable solution, and one that can become part of a legal document.

Is mediation right for me?

Every case is different, but the main benefits of mediation are:

It preserves relationships

Every divorce/separation is different - the circumstances and reactions of those involved always vary. Mediation can benefit couples who want to remain on good terms with each other, particuarly if there are children involved. It's less formal, and less intimidating than going to court and takes place in a neutral venue. So, for many couples, it promotes an amicable end to the relationship.

You're in control

Mediation is less prescriptive than traditional options. The deadlines, timetable and issues to resolve are completley defined by you and your ex-partner. You'll only need to talk about the issues that are important to you.

It's often faster and cheaper than other options

Because mediation puts you in control, you decide what's important - and what needs to be discussed with solicitors. This means it can be more cost-effective than the traditional court process, and it can be quite a bit quicker. Formal proceedings may take months; mediation can take weeks.

Fixed-Fee divorce

We also offer mediation with a fixed-fee pricing structure. This helps you keep costs down and concentrate on the issues that really matter.

At Tees our mediators are all highly experienced family lawyers and have an excellent record of helping many couples reach a settlement through the formal mediation process. The key to our success in this area is that we believe wholeheartedly in the power of mediation to bring people together, to get them talking and to resolve their differences.
