Alison Hills

Senior Associate, Medical Negligence

How can I help you?

I commenced my legal career in 2004 after graduating from the University of Hertfordshire; initially specialising in personal injury litigation. I then diversified my practice into the fields of mental health and medical negligence in 2009.  I achieved Law Society accreditation for mental health in 2011 shortly before I qualified as a Solicitor, and have solely focused my practice on medical negligence claims for the past 10 years.

I have vast experience with a wide range of medical negligence claims, including:

  • Delayed cancer diagnosis
  • Obstetric and gynaecological injury (including claims involving cerebral palsy and erb’s palsy)
  • Fatal medical claims (including inquests, neonatal deaths and claims involving preventable suicide)
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Sepsis claims involving multiple limb amputation
  • Ophthalmic injury involving a permanent loss of vision

I am currently instructed on some very high value and complex cases, including a fatal  claim involving a delayed cancer diagnosis, a multi-million pound stillbirth case with jurisdictional elements, and a claim against the MOD which led to the Claimant being medically discharged from the Army.

Delivering what you really need

I am instructed on a diverse range of cases varying in value and complexity and this is one of the aspects about my job that I enjoy the most (no two cases are ever the same!)

I really enjoy working with clients, medical experts and barristers to try and help clients to understand what has gone wrong during the course of their medical treatment, and to help them to achieve compensation to assist with their future care and treatment needs and achieve the best quality of life possible.

I have recovered a significant amount of compensation on behalf of injured clients throughout the course of my career. Some of the more recent settlements have included:

  • £800,000 for a young boy arising from a delayed diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity which resulted in permanent blindness
  • £1.35m for a young girl following a failure to diagnose and treat malrotation of the bowels, which led to catastrophic volvulus and lifelong treatment needs
  • £85,000 for an elderly client following the mismanagement of pressure sores, which led to significant mobility difficulties
  • £700,000 following negligent hip surgery, which resulted in permanent disability
  • £33,000 for a client who was inappropriately restrained whilst detained under the Mental Health Act 1983
  • £400,000 for a client who suffered from a delayed diagnosis of a slipped femoral epiphysis of the left hip, which then resulted in the need for multiple further hip operations.

What else should you know?

I qualified as a Solicitor in 2012 with a London based firm, specialising in the fields of medical negligence and mental health. I then achieved my Civil Higher Rights of Audience in 2017 (which allows me to personally represent clients at the High Court). In 2020, I achieved Senior Litigator Status with APIL and I am now working towards Law Society accreditation for medical negligence; having previously achieved accreditation for mental health in 2011.

I am also passionate about charity work and pro-bono activities and I was previously on the legal panel for the UK Sepsis Trust and part of the London fundraising group for the Child Brain Injury Trust. I have also volunteered at the CAB and currently sit on the advisory board for the Long Covid Support charity.

Outside of work, I am a keen ski racer and runner! I am part of the British Masters ski team competing in the disciplines of slalom, giant slalom and super-G and in 2019, I was placed 2nd overall in the Masters World Cup standings for my age group! I also ran the London Marathon in 2021 for MIND and I am a qualified run leader with England Athletics.
